After serving as Scotland’s first minister for more than eight years, Nicola Sturgeon has announced her resignation. The leader of the Scottish National Party claimed to have known “in my head and in my heart” that it was time for her to step down. Ms. Sturgeon declared that she would stay in her position until her successor was chosen. She is the first woman to serve as first minister and has held the position the longest.

Despite the fact that the public was expecting the first minister to resign due to the “latest period of pressure” she had experienced, it still sparked talk on social media. Since the news was announced, the hashtag #First Minster has been trending on twitter . While Sturgeon’s supporters have thanked her for a “wonderful job as First Minister of Scotland,” her critics have expressed their joy at her resignation.
Supporters have been expressing their respect and gratitude for Nicola Sturgeon. One user tweeted “ hands up if you think Nicola Sturgeon has done a wonderful job as First Minster of Scotland.”
Another user shared “ Nicola Sturgeon did a fantastic job as First Minster and I really do wish her all the best for the future.”
Irish politician Micelle O’Neil also tweeted “ It is with deep regret to see Nicola Sturgeons resignation. Nicole is a formidable leader who very represented the best of Scotland as First Minster. She made huge strides in advancing Scottish independence and standing up for Scottish interest. (Gabapentin) Her leadership will be missed.” She also shared an image of her and Nicola Sturgeon together.
A number of Sturgeons supporters took to twitter to blame the “ Tory lead Media”. One individual stated “ Nicola Sturgeon is the best politician not just in Scotland but in Britain. She has been bullied out of her role by the Tory biased media. I am disgusted by Britain and a little heartbroken. A dark day for Scottish politics.
However, critics of Nicola Sturgeon were enjoying the situation . Twitter user Ross shared an image of a black screen that says, “ This video does not exist” and stated, “ Nicola Sturgeon releases a video of all her achievements as First Minster of Scotland.”
Broadcaster Dominique Samuels was glad to see Sturgeon resign and expressed “ Sturgeons arrogance in attacking women’s rights in the name of gender ideology was ultimately her downfall”.
Critics of her proposed gender law changes were very pleased to witness her stepping down. One individual tweeted “Nicola is set to resign after being unable to distinguish between a man and a woman. Goodbye”.
