Save Alaa Abd El-Fattah before Saving the Planet

Climate Change is an important issue and The Climate Implementation Summit is essential to find solutions to end the crisis, but how can we expect those who did not care to save a human life starving in prison to save the Earth?

The Earth Summit will be held in a resort in Sharm El-Sheikh, in the presence of many presidents, heads of government, representatives of civil organizations and bodies, and experts from all over the world. The irony of looking into ways to save the Earth at a summit in Egypt, while others are looking into ways to save activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah who was detained in 2011. (https://bellarinova.com/)

Alaa Abd El-Fattah has been on a hunger strike for more than 200 days, which then escalated to him giving up water on Sunday, 6 November, as it marks the beginning of COP27. Alaa was jailed for his participation during the country’s 2011 revolution.

How do you expect a regime like the regime of Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, which excited hundreds of people during his reign and put thousands behind bars without trial or with fabricated charges, to save the Earth? The regime that is still refusing to save a human who might die any second now?

Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi is guilty of what might happen to Alaa within the next few hours, as he insisted on detaining him and disregarded the many pleas of his family and relatives to save Alaa’s life before it is too late. He refuses to hear the demands of governments, international organizations, and citizens who are worried for the life of Alaa, who is guilty of nothing but using his voice to demand freedom, justice, and dignity for his people.

And if all the pleas and calls for the release of Alaa Abdel-Fattah from leaders from all over the world were unable to save him, a starving fragile human detained in a small and cold cell, then how do we hope that the few words which will be shared in the summit can save the planet Earth?

Saving the earth begins with protecting human freedom because he who is not free cannot act freely and responsibly. Protecting our planet begins with protecting and defending the freedom of those who live on it.

It is ironic to hear the leaders participating in the COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh are the same ones who objected to the World Cup 2022 being held in Qatar, claiming that it does not respect workers’ or minorities’ rights, so why did they not object the summit being held in Egypt, a country detaining its people for speaking against their government?
