UK TREND : Royal Mail workers vote to strike again

Royal Mail workers plan to take further national strike action
17 February 2023

In the prolonged pay dispute, thousands of postal workers have chosen to back additional strikes.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU), which is the union that represents more than 110,000 postal workers at the Royal Mail, asserted that more than 95% of employees who cast a vote wanted to go on strike. The largest ever turnout in a significant national strike ballot, according to the Communication Workers Union.

Twitter has seen a huge increase in use of the hashtag #RoyalMail since the vote results were announced. To encourage postal workers to “keep fighting to defend pay, working conditions, and the future of our postal service,” members of the public have been expressing their solidarity and support with them.

General Secretary of The Communication Workers Union (CWU) Dave Ward shared on twitter, that following “ 18 days of strike action, relentless intimidation, gaslighting and demoralisation. Royal Mail thought the union was done. Yet in response, the postal members deliver the biggest ever turnout in a national ballot”. Therefore, according to Mr. Ward, “ the CWU  “must now win the dispute”.

Member of Parliament Claudia Webbe highlighted on her twitter that, “ the Royal Mail profits last year was £758m. They paid £400m to shareholders and gave £2m in bonuses to bosses whilst cutting postal workers’ wages”. And now they’re facing the consequences, as “workers are making history with their strike action”. (xanax)

Postal workers also took to twitter to express their views, one user shared “ we voted yes to be able to talk to Royal Mail and reach an agreement. Strike action is always the last thing that anybody wants. We want to be treated fairly, with respect and to continue this great service that has connected this country for 500 years”.

People expressed their frustration at the “people in charge of the Royal Mail”. As they’re failing to take action and they are doing this against a “ workforce that is a big part of the community. And in some cases, have worked together for 30/40/50 years”.

Individuals also expressed their support for the postal workers.
