UK Trend: Public Response to Sunak’s Speech of Promises

In his first speech of 2023, Rishi Sunak promised to boost the economy, reduce hospital waiting lists, and stop migrants crossing the Channel. As he spoke in Stratford, the prime minister outlined five promises he hoped to fulfil during his premiership. As part of these pledges, the government will halve inflation, expand the economy, reduce debt, shorten hospital waiting lists, and stop migrant crossings.
Twitter’s UK trends page has been swamped with the hashtags #RishiSunak and #SunakSpeech since his speech of promises. The general public have been discussing the speech and how disappointed they are in the prime minister for making what they perceive to be empty promises. People were incensed by his disregard for the NHS crisis and the health workers on strike.
#SunakSpeech and his promises were like 5 New Year’s Resolutions you tell yourself you’ll achieve knowing full well that nobody believes you or gives a toss, apart from your bigoted old uncle who hates foreigners. Low bar, no ambition, no timescales, no future. pic.twitter.com/7CTVvJirf0

One twitter user expressed his outrage with Sunak as “he ignored the NHS crisis and delivered one of the most pathetic speeches not seen since his school speech day. 13 years and we get this BS”.
@RishiSunak in a stroke ignored the NHS crisis and delivered one of the most pathetic speeches not seen since his school speech day. 13 years and we get this BS? #SunakSpeech #SunakOut72

Another user expressed that he “ thought Rishi Sunak was maybe out of his depth as Prime Minster. The content and delivery of his speech confirms it”.
I thought Rishi Sunak was maybe out of his depth as Prime Minster.
The content and delivery of his speech confirms it. https://t.co/diPyjMr9lk— Bob the Elder 💚💙 (@BobHS) January 4, 2023
The public’s response to the prime minister’s lack of content and “lack of imagination and charisma in delivery” seemed to be very negative. The feeling that he was “patronising and giving a load of empty promises” was another factor.
I watched Rishi Sunak's speech & I tried to feel something, anything, other than abject contempt.
Apart from it lacking imagination & charisma in delivery, the content just felt like a load of empty promises and lies. Same old.
Not just me is it?#RishiSunak #SunakSpeech

Anyone else feel spoken to like a child with the mighty #SunakSpeech
Not only was the content utter drivvle but I felt like he was explaining it to a room full of 4 year olds!
Patronising, contemptible truth-twister with zero clue on anything!#SunakOut#GeneralElectionNow— Nicola #GTTO #Pro-EU 😊 (@NicNacB123) January 4, 2023
Aaron Potter, an editor, and others were so enraged by the speech that they were unable to finish it. For Potter, it was when Sunak who comes from a wealthy, privileged background, said, “I know what hard work feels like,” it was significant because he didn’t even have to work on his campaign to be elected. Hence demonstrating the absurdity of his assertion.
Turned off the Rishi Sunak speech after he said "I know what hard work feels like". That's enough bullshit for me, thank you.

Twitter user ‘seo’ was outraged at Sunak saying “no trick, no ambiguity” in his speech, yet everyone else is in agreement that his speech was full of tricks and ambiguity.
What was interesting was he said "no tricks, no ambiguity" in a speech full of tricks and ambiguity. #SunakSpeech

Other twitter users agreed and wished for someone from the government to “be real and honest”. Wondering “why must they always hide behind a mask of prepared speech, shall and meaningless”.

It appears that all twitter users were using the same phrase “ it’s just empty words” to describe the Prime Minsters speech and are calling for a “ General Election now”.

It's just empty words.
We haven't forgotten he was Chancellor before.
Just bring on a General Election now. pic.twitter.com/9DuDmVgI83— Crafty Miss (@CraftyMissB) January 5, 2023
“Empty words without substance. The Tories will be judged on the past 13 years not 5 vacuous promises”.
