Pro-Palestinian Demonstrations in the UK: A Call for International Solidarity

Thousands of supporters of the Palestinian cause gathered in consecutive events across various locations in the United Kingdom.

The initial protest, organized by the Palestinian Forum in Britain, took place on December 30 at 10 Downing Street in London, where protesters called for an immediate ceasefire and the lifting of the blockade on Gaza.

The next day, a second event unfolded, coinciding with the countdown to the commencement of the new year, 2024, in several prominent British cities.

A spokeswoman from the Palestinian Forum in Britain, Jineen Abdullah, told Al-Arab in UK (AUK) that the world is now more aware of the Palestinian struggle and cause.

She highlighted how participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations has steadily increased over the past 12 weeks since the movement started.

Abdullah called for active participation in a major protest scheduled for January 30, emphasizing its international scope beyond Britain. She stressed the significance of engaging in popular movements and highlighted the potential impact of each voice on the fate of those besieged in Gaza.

Upcoming Global Protest for Gaza

Palestinian journalist Ibrahim Sabra spoke of the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza. He spoke of the dire situation in the strip and pointed out that over 20,000 civilians were killed by Israeli airstrikes.

Israel’s crimes go beyond killing Palestinians, they are attempting to erase the collective memory of its residents and manipulate its historical narrative, Sabra said.

Nevertheless, Sabra emphasized that the land recognizes its rightful owners and the Palestinian people will not capitulate; they are determined to rebuild their homeland.

Nearing midnight on New Year’s Eve,  supporters of the cause gathered in major British cities, including London, Manchester, Bristol, and Edinburgh, as the countdown to the new year approached. Demonstrators, instead of partaking in the customary numerical countdown, chanted slogans calling for a ceasefire.

During the event, supporters prominently displayed Palestinian flags, launched fireworks in the colours of the Palestinian flag, and carried banners and images depicting the victims of Zionist aggression. There were also calls for the boycott of companies supporting the Israeli military and brands perceived to be complicit with it.

The United Kingdom continues to witness sustained activism in support of the resilience of the Palestinian people, with calls for an end to Israeli aggression and the lifting of the blockade on Gaza, which is currently grappling with an escalating humanitarian crisis.
