A displaced Syrian girl in northern Syria who lives with her younger brothers in the same tent with her grandparents, wished that during the New Year 2022 she would have a new tent, after the rain damaged her old one.

Shahd, 10 years, “from the northern countryside of Idlib”, said in an interview with Al-Jazeera channel, while she and her brothers were covering their body with a blanket from the severity of the cold, that she wishes to get a new tent.

Shahd’s wish provoked reactions on social media platforms, and many of activists on “Twitter” platform expressed great sympathy with the girl and all Syrian refugee and displaced children, who suffer with their families during the winter.

Winter renews the suffering of Syrian refugees

Each year, the winter season renews the suffering of thousands of families in and around “Idlib”, where three million people live, half of whom are internally displaced people who fled from other areas as the battles progressed during the years of conflict, which claimed the lives of nearly half a million people.

With the onset of heavy rains, the dirt roads separating the tents turn into muddy corridors, from which water seeps into the tents, whose residents try to strengthen them with large stones that stabilize them.

Aid organizations are providing isolation tents, blankets and clothes for displaced families, but donors are struggling to keep up with the increasing demand, according to a French news agency.

In this regard, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated that $182 million in funding is needed to respond to the main needs of more than three million people in Syria this winter, but half of that amount is currently available, according to a (UNHCR) statement last month.

For its part, “Doctors Without Borders”, which provides support to dozens of camps in northwestern Syria, warned that unsafe heating methods increase the risk of respiratory diseases and complications from smoke inhalation.

The organization indicated that respiratory diseases are always among the first three diseases reported in its facilities in northwest Syria.

It is noteworthy that every year a number of people and children die as a result of fires that break out in canvas tents, with unsafe heating methods.
