Welsh Parliament Hosts Solemn Session in Solidarity with Gaza's Medical Heroes

In a display of solidarity and empathy, the Welsh Parliament hosted a commemorative session on the evening of December 20th, organized by the Syrian Welsh Society and Sponsored by Member of Parliament Peredur Griffiths. The session was held to honour the martyrs of the medical teams operating in the Gaza Strip.

Marked by a strong humanitarian ethos and notable attendance from representatives of Wales’ three major political parties and medical professionals from the National Health Service (NHS), the event also drew participation from leaders in civil society and religious figures within the Welsh community.

Irish-Palestinian doctor Yasmine Kamhieh initiated the session, calling upon attendees to observe a moment of silence in solemn remembrance of the medical team martyrs in Gaza. Projected on screens were the names of these individuals, highlighting their heroism and sacrifice.

Opening the formal remarks, Rhun ap Iorwerth, leader of the Plaid Cymru Party, underscored the imperative of a Gaza ceasefire as an initial stride toward peace, emphasizing the preservation of innocent lives and the imperative to rebuild the beleaguered medical sector. Dr. Abdul Azim Ahmed, General Secretary of the Muslim Council of Wales, and Canon Aled Edwards, former General Secretary of the Interfaith Council for Wales, provided insights into the session’s humanitarian and spiritual dimensions.

Adding a cultural and personal touch to the proceedings, Italian-Palestinian poet Dr Sabrin Hasbun delivered a poignant poem, articulating her perspective as a Palestinian Christian from Jerusalem and lamenting the absence of joy in celebrating Christmas this year. She also dedicated a verse to the memory of poet martyr Rafat Al-Ara’ir, a personal acquaintance.

Dr. Ahmed Sabra, a British-Palestinian who recently returned from Gaza, shared firsthand accounts of the ongoing pain and suffering experienced by the Palestinian population, offering a palpable connection to the stark realities faced by those in the Gaza Strip.

Concluding the session, Dr Mohammad Alhadj Ali, Chairman of the Syrian Welsh Society, and event sponsor Member of Parliament Peredur Griffiths reiterated their profound solidarity with the medical teams in Gaza and the broader Palestinian community, emphasizing a global unity in the face of shared adversity and injustice.
