The first Monday of the New Year marks the beginning of many individuals’ personal goals for the new year. Research has found, however, that only 16 percent of people stay committed to their resolutions. If you would like to be in the 16 percent, keep reading to learn how to successfully follow through with your resolutions.

  1. Set a specific goal

Each year, people fail to meet their goals due to ambiguous goals such as “lose weight”. These are hard to achieve and can lead to frustration and a lack of motivation. As a result, people should choose very specific, realistic, and achievable goals.

For example, you might commit to losing 5 kilograms, making daily schedules for meals, or running a mini-marathon. Make sure your goal is realistic rather than excessive.

  1. Make a detailed plan

The key to achieving any goal is picking your resolution wisely and planning thoroughly. The planning stage is essential, as it enables you to consider how you will respond to issues and obstacles. Research suggests that if you don’t have a concrete plan, you’re more likely to give up when you encounter a challenge or setback.

It’s helpful to write down your goal and then write down the steps you can take in order to accomplish it, as well as any obstacles that might stand in your way. By doing this, you will be better prepared to stick with your goals.

  1. Begin with small steps

Attempting too much too quickly is one of the main reasons why New Year’s resolutions fail. As radical change is hard to achieve and even harder to maintain, it’s best to break your goal down into small steps that you can take gradually. Ultimately, it will result in an accomplished goal with an increased likelihood of long-term success.

  1. Refrain from repeating past failures

In addition, avoid making the same New Year’s resolution year after year. As the evidence indicates that people who attempted to achieve a goal and failed will have low self-esteem, therefore making it more difficult to succeed the following year.

In the case of returning to a specific resolution, you should evaluate previous results and the strategies used. Consider modifying your resolution to make it more feasible. By doing so, you will be more likely to achieve your goal.

  1. Get a support system

Having a support system will help you stay on track with your resolutions and give you a sense of accomplishment if you share them with others. By discussing your goals with your closest friends or family members and requesting their help, you can stay on track to achieve your objectives. Additionally, you can join a global online support group with similar-minded individuals who are all working on the same goal.

For example, if you would like to try out being vegan for the month of January, you can sign up and receive daily emails of support with meal plans to try out, etc.
