UK TREND: The harsh reality of Brexit strikes again

UK TREND
22 February 2023

UK TREND- In response to the shortage of fresh produce crippling supermarkets, Asda and Morrisons have placed restrictions on the purchase of some fruits and vegetables.

Asda announced that it would limit customers to three purchases of certain items, including lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers. According to Morrisons, two-product limits will be implemented starting on Tuesday in stores for items like cucumbers.

Following recent difficulties for customers in obtaining certain items, images of empty supermarket shelves have been making the rounds on social media. Twitter has seen a spike in popularity for the hashtags #Asda and Morrisons, #Brexit, and #Brexit reality. People have been venting their anger at the government for persuading the populace that Brexit would be advantageous while they have only continued to suffer the effects.

People were sarcastically tweeting about the situation, for example, “don’t worry if you don’t find any fruits and vegetables, it’s because Brexit has been too successful.” The irony stems from the government’s and Brexit supporters’ obvious inability to understand that Brexit has been a “disaster.”

When will people acknowledge that Brexit was a failure, as we can already see its negative so-called “benefits,” wondered individuals who shared the news of the shortage.

Another wrote, “As if we needed reminding, more bad news regarding the outcomes of Brexit, not the fault of the EU but Farage, ERG, and other Tories that supported Brexit.”

Climate change

Climate change was cited in the media as the reason for the shortage. However, people on Twitter emphasised that “there are no shortages of fruits and vegetables in the EU, not even in Northern Ireland. This is not a climate problem; it is just another Brexit disaster.

Twitter user Andy shared the sad reality British citizens are experiencing nowadays, as he stated “ when I was growing up, I imagined we would be in flying cars, going to Mars on holiday and everyone would be living in luxury. Instead, we’re too scared to heat our homes, can’t pay our bills and lucky enough to get a tomato”.

Individuals also took to twitter to express their outrage at media outlets such as the BBC, who covered the story of grocery stores limiting sales of some fruits and vegetables but failed to mention “ the BREXIT word”, which is the true cause of this issue.

People continue to discuss the problem on Twitter and blame Brexit for difficulties that the public is having, like the lack of supply of fruits and vegetables.
