UK TREND : The controversy of Shamima Begum

Shamima Begum raises controversy in Britain

Shamima Begum‘s appeal against the decision to revoke her British citizenship was unsuccessful. She travelled to Syria eight years ago when she was 15 to join the Islamic State, and she is still living in a camp for refugees there.

Begum had been contesting Sajid Javid’s decision to revoke her British citizenship in 2019. The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac) determined that this decision was legal and that the possibility that she had been trafficked to Syria was insufficient for her to win the appeal.

Shamima Begum lost her appeal against the home office decision

Following the announcement that Begum had lost her appeal against the decision to have her British citizenship revoked, the hashtag #Shamima Begum began to trend on social media. The general public is divided; a large portion of them support Begum and believe that her “loss of appeal is a gross miscarriage of justice as she was groomed.” Others have backed the decision to reject the appeal, saying that allowing her to go back to the UK would have created a “genuine threat to our security.”

One of the supporters of Shamima Begum shared their disappointment in the latest decision and shared that “ Shamima’s loss of appeal is a gross miscarriage of justice against a girl who was groomed and traumatised, and a warning sign that the citizenship of diaspora groups is contingent on avoiding criminalisation. The mainstream media is complicit in this harm”.

Some individuals believed “ the real issue underpinning the Shamima Begum case is racism”.

Others were also using the case to highlight that the government is using stories such as Begums as propaganda to create a two-tier citizenship system. As it is that she was groomed and was smuggled to Syria by a Canadian spy at the age of 15. Yet the government covered that up for their own agenda”.

Politician Nigel Farage was amongst those against Shamima Begum, he tweeted that “ if she had been given her citizenship, it would have opened the door to dozens more and be a genuine threat to our security”.

Another member of the public tweeted “ for all the people saying Shamima Begum should be allowed back to the UK…get over yourselves. She’s a Terrorist, she knew EXACTLY what she was getting into.”

Broadcaster Sophie Corcoran took to twitter to defend those against Begum and stated that “ people supporting her need to realise that there are many people in Britain who have lost friends and family to ISIS terror, and they have to sit there and read your ignorant virtue signalling about a woman who said those deaths were justified”.

Other individuals were not clear whether they support Shamima Begum or not but were more focused on the fact that “ the UK is not serving justice but dumping the issue of a British born citizen on another country”.
