Red Ribbons Stand Highlights Year-Long Detention of Abu Safiya

The Palestinian Forum in Britain has called for participation in a silent vigil as part of the Red Ribbons Campaign, marking one full year since the abduction and detention of paediatrician Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, and demanding his release along with all Palestinian detainees. The Forum has also urged supporters worldwide to engage with the campaign and carry it to their own cities.

The vigil is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 27 December 2025, at 1:30 pm, outside the Israeli Embassy in London, near High Street Kensington station. It forms part of a series of actions aimed at keeping the issue of “Palestinian hostages” in the public eye and reminding the international community of their ongoing suffering.

The mobilisation coincides with the first anniversary of the arrest of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, one of the most prominent doctors who continued to carry out his humanitarian duties under extremely harsh conditions. During the assault, Abu Safiya lost his son and was forced to bury him in the hospital courtyard due to the lack of alternatives. He himself sustained a leg injury while working, before being arrested on 27 December 2024. To date, no reliable information has emerged regarding his place of detention or his health condition.

The Forum noted that the London vigil is part of a broader wave of solidarity actions expected to take place simultaneously in several cities around the world, in an effort to exert pressure for the release of Dr Abu Safiya and all Palestinian detainees, and to reject attempts to marginalise their cases in media and political discourse, particularly during holiday periods.

In its call to participate, the Palestinian Forum in Britain stressed that the silent vigil carries a clear message: the abduction of doctors and humanitarian workers is a crime that cannot be normalised or met with silence. It emphasised that presence and participation, even in silence, constitute a powerful act of solidarity.

The Forum also explained that the vigil will be followed by on-the-ground activities as part of the Red Ribbons Campaign in the wider Kensington area, including the display of red ribbons and posters, aimed at keeping the issue of Palestinian detainees visible in public spaces.

The call concluded by underscoring that the suffering of Palestinian detainees cannot wait, and that they have the right to return to their children, families, and lives, urging the widest possible participation as an expression of solidarity and humanitarian commitment.
