Palestinian Forum in Britain calls on the British Museum to apologize and restore “Palestine” to the forefront
The Palestinian Forum in Britain has called on the British Museum to issue a formal apology and to restore the name “Palestine” to relevant exhibits and historical contexts, describing the recent measures as an attempt to erase the Palestinian historical narrative.
Warning Against the Erasure of History

The forum emphasized that the British Museum, as one of the world’s leading cultural institutions, bears a responsibility to present history with accuracy, integrity, and independence from political pressure. It noted that the changes followed complaints from a pro-Israel legal group and pointed out that the museum had described the term “Palestine” as “politically sensitive” in certain contexts.
The forum cautioned that these justifications raise serious concern, stressing that cultural institutions should not alter historical language or broader interpretation under political pressure—particularly when doing so risks further marginalizing a people already experiencing displacement. It added that removing or obscuring the name “Palestine” cannot be viewed as a neutral administrative measure but rather reflects a broader pattern of erasing Palestinian identity and heritage from public narratives.
The letter further underscored that the name “Palestine” is not merely a geographic designation, but an expression of a living culture, collective memory, and a continuous historical connection to the land.
Pressure on the Name “Palestine” in Historical Displays

The forum indicated that these developments come at a time when Palestinian sites, archives, and cultural institutions face increasing threats, warning that actions by a globally respected museum could contribute to legitimizing the erasure of Palestinian history and identity. Officials cautioned that this risks undermining public trust in cultural institutions and raises questions about the influence of political pressure on historical representation.
The forum called on the museum’s Board of Trustees to:
- Reinstate the name “Palestine” in all appropriate historical and geographical contexts.
- Engage with Palestinian historians, archaeologists, and cultural experts to ensure fair and accurate representation.
- Reaffirm a commitment to independent academic research, free from political influence.
The letter concluded by stressing that the credibility of the British Museum as a global institution depends on its adherence to historical truth and its respect for the cultures and peoples whose heritage it preserves, urging a prompt review of the decision.
