It noted that the changes followed complaints from a pro-Israel legal group and pointed out that the museum had described the term “Palestine” as “politically sensitive” in certain contexts.

The forum cautioned that these justifications raise serious concern, stressing that cultural institutions should not alter historical language or broader interpretation under political pressure—particularly when doing so risks further marginalizing a people already experiencing displacement. It added that removing or obscuring the name “Palestine” cannot be viewed as a neutral administrative measure but rather reflects a broader pattern of erasing Palestinian identity and heritage from public narratives.

• Reaffirm a commitment to independent academic research, free from political influence.

The letter concluded by stressing that the credibility of the British Museum as a global institution depends on its adherence to historical truth and its respect for the cultures and peoples whose heritage it preserves, urging a prompt review of the decision.
