From Refugee to British Cabinet Minister: Who Is Miatta Fahnbulleh, Energy Chief in Burnham’s Government?
In one of the most prominent shifts in UK politics, the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced the appointment of economist Miatta Fahnbulleh as Minister for Energy and Net Zero.
This appointment holds particular significance; the daughter of Liberian politician and refugee Henry Boimah Fahnbulleh Jr. is now heading one of the most critical strategic portfolios in the British government—a journey reflecting her rise from a childhood shaped by the refugee experience to taking on a cabinet role in one of the world’s largest economies.
Miatta Fahnbulleh was born in Liberia in September 1979 to a prominent political family. Her father, Dr. Henry Boimah Fahnbulleh Jr., is an academic, diplomat, and politician who served as Liberia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Education, while her mother hails from Sierra Leone.
With escalating political and security turmoil in Liberia during the 1980s, the family was forced to flee the country in search of safety. Miatta arrived in the UK in 1986 at the age of six with her family, where they were granted political asylum and started a new life in London.
Academic Excellence and the Heart of Government
Raised in North London, Miatta attended the Beechwood Sacred Heart School before entering the University of Oxford, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). She then continued her academic journey at the London School of Economics (LSE), obtaining a PhD in Economic Development, with her research focusing on economic growth and state responses to crises.
She subsequently moved into decision-making institutions, serving as a policy advisor in the Strategy Unit at the Cabinet Office. Later, she served as Chief Executive of the New Economics Foundation (NEF)—one of the UK’s leading economic think tanks—where she led research on economic justice, energy market reform, and the transition to a green economy.
Fahnbulleh entered the House of Commons for the Labour Party representing the constituency of Peckham in London, quickly emerging as one of the party’s foremost voices on economics, energy, and sustainable development.
With the formation of Andy Burnham’s government, she was chosen to head the Ministry of Energy and Net Zero, drawing on extensive academic and professional expertise in economics, energy, and public policy.
