Wildlife experts are warning British citizens of deadly creatures, that can be mistaken for Jellyfish, found on some of Britain’s beaches.

Are We in Danger?

Even though incidents are very rare to happen, it is still possible to get stung by a Portuguese Man O’War, reported the Mirror. One venomous sting from this Portuguese Man O’War is enough to end the life of a human, even if the creature is long dead.

How do they end up on the shore?

Storms and strong wind drive Portuguese Man O’war from their lairs in the ocean to shallow waters and now they are looking for plankton to eat.

Locals in Cornwall have recently reported spotting Portuguese Man O’war that was washed up on Sennen Beach and near Portheras Cove.

What do these creatures look like?

The Wildlife Trust has stated that these creatures are not usually found in the UK. However, they can get washed up to Britain’s beaches by the strong stormy weather between September to December.

Portuguese Man O’war’s purple body can grow up to 12ft, and their ribbon like tentacles can reach up to 160ft.

The Mirror quote Wildlife Trust spokesman saying: “A Wildlife Trust spokesman said: “First of all, the Portuguese Man O’war is not a jellyfish. It is made up of small individual animals each with their own specific function. They can’t live separately.”

What did the authorities say?

They added that these creatures are unable to swim and are carried by the winds. That is exactly how they end up on shore to terrorize humans.

“They are fearsome predators, catching small fish and crustaceans with their long stinging tentacles. It’s these tentacles that you need to watch out for too — they can sting long after the animal has died,” they warned

The authorities had warned the people not to touch those creatures and to report any sighting of them directly. They have also urged them not to let their pets go near the creatures if found on beaches.
