From Manchester to Sheffield: Father and Daughter Cycle to Raise Funds for Yemen
In a moving act of solidarity, a British-Yemeni daughter is cycling from Manchester to Sheffield with her father — not for sport, but to raise urgent funds for mothers and children affected by the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
Mina, who was born and raised in the UK and whose family hails from the historic city of Aden, has launched this initiative to support healthcare services in her parents’ homeland. The goal: to raise £5,000 for Islamic Relief’s life-saving work at maternity and children’s hospitals in southern Yemen.
A Personal Journey Rooted in Compassion
Deeply affected by the stories of children growing up in conflict, Mina decided to take action — embarking on a challenging long-distance bike ride to highlight the suffering of families in Yemen and encourage donations to help them.
She and her father, Khaled, are making the journey together from Manchester to Sheffield as a show of intergenerational commitment and a message that no effort is too small when it comes to saving lives.
Why Yemen?
After over a decade of war, Yemen remains one of the world’s worst humanitarian emergencies. More than 21 million people — including millions of women and children — lack access to food, clean water, or basic healthcare. Hospitals are struggling to function with scarce supplies, unreliable electricity, and a shortage of trained medical staff.
Islamic Relief is working on the ground to deliver maternal and neonatal care in regions such as Aden and Abyan. Their current efforts include:
* Providing essential healthcare to mothers and newborns
* Supplying four medical facilities with medicines and equipment
* Deploying trained and gender-balanced healthcare workers
* Rehabilitating clinics and installing solar energy systems
These services often mean the difference between life and death for pregnant women and infants in remote or war-affected areas.
A Civic Welcome in Sheffield
Mina and Khaled are expected to complete their journey on Saturday 12 July 2025, with a public reception at Sheffield City Hall at 12:30pm. They will be welcomed by Sheffield’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Safiya Saeed, and local MP Ibtisam Mohamed, the city’s first Member of Parliament of Yemeni heritage.
This initiative not only raises funds but also strengthens ties across communities, offering a powerful reminder that individual action — rooted in empathy — can have a real impact.
