Dr. Ghada Karmi, a distinguished Palestinian academic, author, and researcher, has been named one of the honourees at the 2024 Al Arab in UK (AUK) Gala Dinner. The event, themed “United for Gaza & Lebanon,” aims to celebrate notable Arab figures who have demonstrated unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, specifically in Gaza, throughout 2024. The Gala will take place on Monday, October 21st, 2024, at the Richmond Hall, Hilton London Metropole, and will be a significant gathering of influential personalities from across the Arab community in the UK.

Who is Ghada Karmi?

Born in Jerusalem in 1939, Dr. Ghada Karmi and her family were among the many Palestinians forced into exile during the 1948 Nakba. Her family relocated to Britain, where she pursued an academic career. She studied medicine and went on to become an influential researcher, academic, and writer, advocating for Palestinian rights and documenting the complexities of the Palestinian identity in exile.

Dr. Karmi is most known for her deeply personal and politically astute writings on the Palestinian experience, including her renowned memoirs In Search of Fatima: A Palestinian Story (2002) and Return: A Palestinian Memoir (2015). She has contributed significantly to raising awareness on the Palestinian plight in academic and political arenas, often voicing the need for a just and peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Throughout her career, she has been a vocal critic of Israeli policies and Western complicity, positioning her as a key figure in advocating for Palestinian statehood and human rights.

Why is Ghada Karmi an Honouree?

Ghada Karmi’s selection as an honouree for the 2024 AUK Gala Dinner is a testament to her lifelong dedication to Palestinian advocacy, both within the UK and internationally. In a year marked by escalating violence in Gaza, Karmi’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause remains unwavering. Her academic work and public speaking engagements throughout 2024 have focused on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the need for global action and support.

This recognition by the AUK platform highlights Karmi’s efforts to educate the international community about the realities faced by Palestinians, advocating not only for peace but also for justice. Her ability to bridge academic discourse with activism has made her a vital voice in standing against the ongoing aggression in Gaza. In honouring her, the AUK platform acknowledges her significant contributions to promoting solidarity with Gaza and her continued influence in shaping the conversation on Palestinian rights.

The AUK Gala Dinner 2024: A Night for Gaza

The Gala Dinner, hosted by Al Arab in UK (AUK), marks two years since the platform’s launch. After being postponed due to the escalation of violence in Gaza, the event now doubles as a celebration and a call for action. Proceeds from ticket sales and donations, as well as an art auction, will be directed toward Action For Humanity (AFH) to support crucial humanitarian projects in Gaza.

This year’s event will honour not just Dr. Ghada Karmi but also other prominent Arab figures such as Dr. Ahmed Mikhlalati (war-zone surgeon), Anwar El Ghazi (footballer), and Lowkey (artist), all of whom have contributed to supporting Gaza in 2024.

The AUK Gala Dinner provides an opportunity for attendees to connect with key figures from various fields who share their dedication to supporting Gaza. With a ticket price starting at £100 for regular seats and £500 for premium seating, attendees can make a meaningful contribution to humanitarian efforts. The event promises an evening of insight, art, and networking, all in support of a vital cause.
