Predictions for Britain’s approach to Covid in the winter
Boris Johnson is set to speak at a press conference on Tuesday, where he will outline how vaccines will provide Britain’s main defense during the colder months. The prime minister is said to be “dead set” on avoiding further lockdown measures, according to a government source who spoke with the Daily Telegraph.
As of the 12th of September, #Britain has fully vaccinated nearly 81% of the population aged 16 and over, with around 90% receiving at least the first dose.
England
The UK’s top medical officials are set to advise the government on the need to vaccinate children aged 12-15 years. That is after the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization concluded the benefit would be marginal. The Prime Minister is also expected to approve the third booster dose.
However, it seems that “vaccine passports” are not part of the winter plan against covid-19. According to Sky News, Johnson had previously said vaccine passports would be required in crowded places. (https://treehouselodge.com/) However, Tory MPs expressed anger regarding the passports, which obstructed the plan. It should be noted that passports remain a viable option in the future.
The traffic light system may also soon be abolished, with the Daily Telegraph reporting that the number of red list countries will be reduced, and PCR tests will not be required for fully vaccinated arrivals.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
The abolition of vaccination passports in #England could distinguish it from #Scotland and #Wales.
In Scotland, authorities passed motion to bring introduce them on Thursday. Wales is due to make a decision on them next week, while Northern Ireland’s leaders have yet to make a formal decision.
