Pregnant women make up one fifth of most life-threatening covid cases in England
Recent NHS figures have shown that unvaccinated pregnant women make up almost a fifth of the most life-threatening covid cases in England.
According to Sky News, data show that 17% of the patients receiving treatment through a lung-bypass machine in the three previous months (July-September) were unvaccinated pregnant women.
Also, expectant mothers accounted for 32% of all females aged between 16 and 49 in intensive care on ECMO – a medical technique used when a patient’s lungs are so badly damaged that a ventilator cannot maintain oxygen levels.
The National Childbirth Trust said the statistics are a “damning indictment of the lack of attention given to this vulnerable group as restrictions have eased”.
The NHS is hoping these figures may convince any unvaccinated women to hurry up and get their two doses of covid-19 vaccines.
Pregnant women are safe to receive coronavirus vaccines
More than 81,000 pregnant women have received the first dose of a COVID vaccine, reports Sky News, and about 65,000 have received their second dose.
There is a slight chance that some pregnant women have refrained from getting their jabs due to fears of side effects to the baby’s health.
However, medical professionals have stressed there is no data indicating the vaccine leads to worse outcomes for babies.
Dr Jo Mountfield, vice president of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), said there is an “increasing amount of data that tells us that it does not increase the risk of miscarriage, it does not increase the risk of stillbirth, and it does not include increased the risk of prematurity”.
