Dr Mohamed Elnaieem, a prominent community leader and long-time volunteer, has been officially recognised by Westminster City Council as a “Local Hero,” celebrating over 30 years of service to the Sudanese diaspora and the wider Westminster community in London.

In a special ceremony held on 16 June 2025, Elnaieem was one of only 18 honourees—drawn from a variety of backgrounds—chosen for their exceptional community contributions. He was the sole Sudanese recipient of the award this year.

Describing the recognition as “an honour not just for myself, but for all Sudanese volunteers across the UK,” Elnaieem said the award reflects growing appreciation from British society for the efforts of Sudanese and other migrant communities working in the field of public service and community development.

Westminster Council praised his decades-long work supporting young people, tackling issues such as drug abuse and gang violence, and helping youth navigate academic and career paths. As Vice Chair of the Children and Young People Network in Westminster, and the founder of both Hilal Rangers Youth FC and the Sudanese Youth Club, Elnaieem has long championed social cohesion and youth empowerment.

In a striking tribute, the council displayed images of this year’s honourees at prominent bus stops across the city, offering public visibility for grassroots changemakers.

This marks the fourth official recognition Dr Elnaieem has received for his community service. He was previously honoured by Westminster Council in:

  • 2018, for “Outstanding Contribution to the Community”
  • 2019, as one of the borough’s “Local Heroes”
  • 2020, as one of the “Unsung Heroes” of Westminster

In a previous statement, Westminster Lord Mayor Lindsey Hall praised Elnaieem for “bringing together young people of all backgrounds and cultures” over more than two decades of tireless volunteer work.

Beyond his voluntary roles, Dr Elnaieem has led several key institutions within the Sudanese community in Britain. He has served multiple terms as President of the Sudanese Community Association in London, and currently chairs the Sudanese University of Khartoum Alumni Association in the UK. He has also chaired the board of the Sudanese School in London.

Arriving in the UK in 1991 after earning his engineering degree from the University of Khartoum, Elnaieem went on to complete a Master’s in Information Technology Engineering and a PhD in Management Sciences.

The City of Westminster’s official citation reads:

“Mohamed Elnaieem, Vice Chair of Children and Young People Network in Westminster, has spent 30 years empowering the Sudanese diaspora and Westminster community. A founder and chair of Hilal Rangers Youth FC, he promotes social cohesion and youth development while tackling gang violence, terrorism, and identity challenges.”

This latest honour stands as a testament to the impact of African and Sudanese contributions to British civic life—particularly through the quiet, committed work of volunteers like Mohamed Elnaieem.
