Palestinian Filmmaker Arwa Aburawa Shortlisted for 2025 Jarman Award
Palestinian-British filmmaker Arwa Aburawa has been shortlisted for the prestigious Film London Jarman Award 2025, one of the UK’s most significant recognitions for experimental moving image artists.
Aburawa was nominated alongside her collaborator Turab Shah for their film And Still, It Remains (2023), which explores the long-term impact of French colonial nuclear testing in Mertoutek, a remote village in southern Algeria. Through meditative visuals and subtle narrative, the film reflects on the enduring consequences of imperial violence and environmental degradation.
The shortlisted works for this year’s award span a range of global locations—from Nigeria and Jamaica to Italy and East London—and engage with pressing themes such as protest, memory, identity, and migration.
Aburawa, who is of Palestinian descent, is known for her work addressing race, environmental justice, and colonial legacies. She is also the co-founder of Other Cinemas, an initiative supporting Black and non-white filmmakers through free community film screenings and training in London.
The Jarman Award, now in its 18th year, comes with a £10,000 prize. The winner will be announced in November, following a national tour and a group exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, running from 18 November to 14 December 2025.
The award is named after the late filmmaker Derek Jarman and recognises bold, politically engaged, and formally inventive work in the UK’s moving image landscape.
