MPs are ‘planning Johnson’s downfall,’ and there’s a Plan B update.
For the prime minister, many of the papers are giving a bleak image of the future.
The prime minister has been continuously mocked for insisting in an interview yesterday that he had no idea he was breaking any rules when he went to a drinks reception in the Downing Street garden during the initial lockdown.
He was quoted in the Independent as saying “No one warned me the party was against the rules, says the man who set the rules” whereas the majority of the other headlines kept a focus on the internal
party rebellion Johnson is facing
The Daily Mail
The Daily Mail mentioned that the feeling among a few Mr Johnson supporters is “outrage” at what’s become known as the “pork pie plot” since one of the MPs included represents Melton Mowbray.
The Financial Times
The Financial Times depicts Downing Street as being “apprehensive” about a potential rebellion from the north. It additionally cites an unnamed source who says the plotters are unpracticed and any move they make won’t add up to a lot.
The Daily Telegraph
In the Telegraph it was reported that Johnson is set to declare the lifting of England’s Plan B Covid restrictions today. The report continues and mentions that the cabinet will approve plans to ditch work from home guidance and Covid passports – though some mask-wearing will be maintained.
The Daily Mirror
The Daily Mirror reported that Mr Johnson’s popularity is “yet to be determined.” But it cites another Tory MP who said “His time has gone”
In the Times, they reported that the prime minister is planning to announce “the end of Covid restrictions”. It reports Covid testing facilities will begin to close from spring, both to set aside money and as a component of a drawn-out technique of “living with the virus.”
