The Palestinian Return Centre in London Marks Its 30th Anniversary

Return Centre (PRC), based in London, is commemorating the 30th anniversary of its establishment, reaffirming its commitment to defending the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. The anniversary comes at a time when the Palestinian cause is facing one of its most critical phases, amid the ongoing genocide, forced displacement, settlement expansion, and attempts to erase Palestinian national rights and reshape the future of Palestine without the will of its people.

Three Decades of Commitment to Principle

The Centre stresses that reaching its 30th anniversary since its founding in 1996 is not merely a milestone in its history, but a testament to its enduring mission of strengthening international legal and political awareness of Palestinian rights and promoting the Palestinian narrative as an integral part of the global struggle for justice and human rights.

Palestinian rights remain inalienable rights grounded in international law and United Nations resolutions. They cannot be extinguished by the passage of time or by facts imposed through force. The past three decades have demonstrated that attempts to circumvent these rights or replace them with temporary political arrangements have only deepened the conflict. Respect for justice and international law remains the only path toward a just and lasting peace.

Launch of The Return Tent

To mark its 30th anniversary, the Palestinian Return Centre is launching its promotional short film, The Return Tent, which highlights key milestones in the Centre’s journey while showcasing its mission, achievements, and enduring commitment to defending Palestinian rights.

The Centre has pursued sustained political advocacy through its international partnerships and its Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), granted in 2015. It has also developed strong relationships with parliamentarians and policymakers in Westminster and within United Nations forums, helping to advance Palestinian rights and influence international policies and positions.

A Cause That Endures and a Return Yet to Come

The Centre affirms that the Palestinian collective memory will remain alive, passed down from one generation to the next and preserved through documentation, research, and human rights advocacy.

Guided by this conviction, the Centre has worked since its establishment to produce knowledge, document violations, record testimonies, prepare legal studies and policy briefings, and strengthen engagement with parliaments, academic institutions, human rights organisations, and media outlets.

It has also led major grassroots initiatives across Europe and internationally—including the Palestinians in Europe Conference and large-scale advocacy campaigns—while helping establish active institutions throughout countries hosting Palestinian refugees. In addition, it has published numerous books, studies, and reference materials that have enriched understanding of the Palestinian people’s history and ongoing suffering.

The Centre notes that recent developments have demonstrated more clearly than ever that the refugee issue is not a matter of the past but a living and recurring reality, renewed with every attempt at displacement, dispossession, or land confiscation. The right of return is not a distant aspiration but an existing legal right and a future built through sustained effort. Accordingly, the Centre reaffirms its determination to continue advancing this right through legal, research, and media initiatives.

The Centre’s Origins and Institutional Development

Founded in London in 1996 as an independent, non-partisan organisation, the Palestinian Return Centre was established to serve as a research, media, and human rights institution dedicated to the issue of Palestinian refugees, with particular emphasis on the right of return as guaranteed under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194.

Over the past three decades, the Centre has evolved from a locally focused organisation into an internationally recognised institution with a field presence in refugee camps across Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, as well as a high-level institutional presence in Geneva and New York.

This international standing was consolidated in 2015 when the Centre obtained Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), enabling it to submit official reports and statements before United Nations human rights mechanisms.

Core Areas of Work and Strategic Priorities

The Centre has developed a comprehensive institutional model that combines principled advocacy with effective engagement across nine key areas:

• Parliamentary Delegations: Organising fact-finding visits for British and European parliamentarians to the occupied Palestinian territory and refugee camps to expose ongoing violations and strengthen legislative support for Palestinian rights.
• Westminster Parliamentary Events: Holding regular briefings and discussions for British lawmakers and policymakers to ensure that issues relating to refugees, settlements, and the blockade remain on the political agenda.
• United Nations Advocacy: Submitting documented reports to UN Special Rapporteurs, engaging with genocide prevention mechanisms, and cooperating with UN member states to mobilise international support.
• Palestinians in Europe Conference: Established in 2003, the conference has held more than 19 consecutive editions, bringing together the Palestinian diaspora across Europe around the right of return and prisoners’ issues. It has also generated humanitarian initiatives and flotillas aimed at breaking the blockade on Gaza.

• “Return Is My Right and My Decision” Campaign (2020): Launched to confront initiatives seeking to undermine Palestinian rights.
• Balfour Campaign (2017): Contributed to securing a historic official acknowledgement by the British government that the Balfour Declaration failed to protect the political rights of the Palestinian people.
• Annual Return Week: Organised each year to coincide with the anniversary of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194.
• Digital Conferences and Webinars: Delivering academic and human rights events through digital platforms, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, to broaden international engagement and solidarity.
• Public Affairs and Advocacy: Building partnerships with international human rights organisations and issuing policy memoranda urging governments to safeguard refugee rights and maintain funding for UNRWA.
• Publications, Research, and Reports: Producing an extensive body of work comprising more than 20 books, over 200 reports, 50 research studies, newsletters, information resources, and a comprehensive historical atlas documenting thousands of Palestinian villages, place names, and historical sites.
• Visual Identity: The Centre’s logo has undergone four major design and colour transformations reflecting key political developments—from the original green-and-red logo featuring barbed wire in 1996, to a monochrome version in 2009, a silver-grey design in 2014, and finally a contemporary deep-red identity introduced to mark the Centre’s 30th anniversary in 2026.
