UK TREND: Plans for ULEZ expansion ignite Twitter

ULEZ
15 January 2023

Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the ULEZ scheme will be extended to include the entire capital of London as of August 2023.

A number of London boroughs have spoken out against the expansion, pledging to oppose the mayor’s “outrageous” plan in any way they can. Some have even suggested blocking the new cameras as a form of protest against the project, whose supporters claim will provide millions with cleaner air.

Following the announcement of the news, the hashtag #ULEZ began to gain popularity on Twitter as users voiced their displeasure with both the new plans and with Sadiq Khan, who they claimed was “killing London,” with his plans.

Individuals were furious over the amounts they would have to be paying , “congestion charge (£15 per day) and ULEZ charge (£12.50 per day) will be £127.50 for 5 working days across greater London”. People were in shock, especially considering the way everyone is already struggling with the cost-of-living crisis.

On Twitter, a wanted poster for Sadiq Khan with the caption “WANTED for crimes against London” was circulated. It “looks like we actually live in a communist state now, because we cannot remove the toxic Sadiq Khan,” one Twitter user wrote, questioning the intentions behind this expansion.

British businessman and politician Richard Tice commented on how “ this is a disgraceful waste of taxpayers cash : ULEZ expansion cost £160m across London despite Londoners rejecting in consultation”.

People were expressing their shock over the fact that the government will be using “ £160 million to expand the ULEZ zone. For cameras, signage and publicity” . Although “ 70% of residents and %80 of businesses was against this expansion”.

Twitter user Michael took to twitter to mock Mayor Khan for “ quoting science when talking about global warming yet ignoring it when it comes to ULEZ expansions …. As scientists have told him it will make little or no difference to air quality”. Thus, why to members of the public it seems to be  “all about the money”.

The scheme has been called “outrageous” and a “vanity project” for the mayor, according to councils like Harrow, as per author Harriet Sergeant, who shared the telegraphs article on twitter. It is obvious that it would “disproportionately impact lower income households”.

A total of 160,000 cars and 42,000 vans would be subject to the £12.50 fee every day, as well as the £15 congestion charge during certain hours.
