UK Politics and the Crisis of Democracy in the West

UK Politics and the Crisis of Democracy in the West
29 October 2022

The distress we see in UK Politics and the crisis of democracy we are witnessing can be also seen in other European countries with varying effects on the social and economic status. It was perhaps clear when looking at Liz Truss’s resignation that was expected by many, just as her election was also foreseen.

Britain is still seen as the model that established democracy in Western Europe and the main indicator of its status. Since the Conservative Party took over ruling Britain 12 years ago, the part had been ruled by groups that lack political understanding. Known members of these groups include Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Dominic Raab, and others.

These groups of bad politicians had broken what Britain was trying to build for years. It had devalued democracy to the point the people lost trust in the party and its opposition.

Tony Blair and Gordon Brown also changed how people see the left parties in Britain. This was proven when the right wing had won in more than one election in Europe, from France to Italy.

This is not to say that the right-wing is better, with its populists and extremists leading.

The crisis of democracy and how it is changing

A blatant British example of this is the 2016 referendum on leaving Europe (Brexit), in which that group in the ruling Conservative Party managed to convince the masses that “Brexit” is the best thing for Britain and will turn British lives into unprecedented economic prosperity. The referendum campaign was built on lies and fabrications. The British courts recently proved an outright lie that misled the masses.

The party however will never admit that the main root of Britain’s current problems is “Brexit”. How can they point out the flaws in what they considered their greatest achievement?

Perhaps what proves the change of democracy and the rise of extremists in politics is the blatant racist remarks and decisions the ruling party makes. This became more evident with the war in Ukraine, and the tolerance of that racism in the media and in the public almost normalizes it after a while.

Another example is how they chose to deal with illegal immigration and how they use the law to back them up. Even neglecting to mention how those “immigrants” are asylum seekers or refugees running away from desperate situations looking for a place to finally live.

All of this is pushing the Western democratic process to almost collapse. For example, when Boris Johnson was forced to resign after repeatedly breaking the law and continuously rising scandals, the Conservative Party chose Liz Truss as his successor.

In other words, a few tens of thousands decided who would rule over sixty million people. As the final rivalry was between Rishi Sunak, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, of Indian descent, and Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, from the English countryside, members of the ruling party chose Tuss, not because she was the most qualified or skilled but simply because she “looked like them”.
