The UK is seeing highest Covid-19 rates in Europe
With so many issues being reported in the news, no one is paying attention to the fact that the UK has now one of the highest rates in Covid-19 cases in Europe. With winter almost near, how worried should we really be?
The current numbers are very concerning. Only a few countries in the whole of Europe actually exceeds the UK in number of Covid cases.
What are the reasons for this?
Many reasons can be taken into consideration to explain this, according to the BBC. The UK – England – was one of the first countries to end almost all covid related restrictions. Europe did not follow until later, while some maintain some restrictions still.
Secondly, one must consider vaccination rollouts as well. The UK led the world in vaccinations at first, but it lags now because it is just now starting to vaccinate kids bellow the age of 16.
The Death Rates
On daily average, there are over 100 deaths caused by Covid -19. This may sound as a big number, but compared to a bad flu season, the number are almost normal.
Death rate should not be the main measure, says the BBC. As there are around 700 people admitted to the hospital with Covid-19 on daily basis. There is also the danger of having long Covid, where symptoms remain long after infection.
What Are the Promising Signs?
It is not just where we are at, but where we are headed that should be focused on. Different countries practice different measures, so it is only natural for discrepancies to manifest.
Covid-19 death rates in the last few weeks had dropped, which is an achievement considering the release of restrictions.
The high rates of infection are seen among teenagers now, specifically those under 16 who did not have the chance to get the covid vaccine yet. But once this comes to an end, there may just be a significant drop in covid cases by winter.
