Europe’s First Palestinian Museum Opens in Edinburgh: A Tribute to Art, Memory, and Resistance
A historic milestone unfolded in the heart of Edinburgh as the Augustine United Church welcomed the launch of Europe’s first Palestinian museum — a space dedicated to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Palestine through contemporary art.
The opening event brought together artists, poets, and supporters for an evening that honoured Palestinian creativity and resilience. Faisal Saleh, founder of the Palestine Museum US and guest speaker at the event, described the museum as “a window into Palestine from a deeply human perspective,” adding, “Palestinian artists don’t just carry their brushes — they carry stories that hold centuries of heritage.”
The evening featured a stirring operatic performance by singer Zeina Shma, blending Palestinian folk melodies with classical music. “It felt like two cultures meeting through the language of freedom,” she said. “Tonight, I sang for Palestine — and I heard the world sing back: We are all Palestine.”
Palestinian-Jordanian poet and actress Saja Kilani took to the stage with a powerful multilingual performance in classical Arabic, colloquial dialect, and English, weaving together verses that evoked the memory of a homeland lost. One standout line read:
“If the shape of my identity unsettles you, look into your mirror — not at my face. The threat is not in my presence, but in the fragility of your perception.”
Later, poet Nada Shawa performed alongside a cellist in a deeply moving fusion of strings and verse that held the audience in captivated silence.
The event concluded with a charity auction of artworks and handmade crafts donated by the Palestinian shop Hadeel, alongside contributions from local Scottish supporters. The fundraiser collected over £1,600 to support the development of the museum.
Organisers emphasised that the museum is not only a gallery but also a cultural platform. It will feature a digital archive documenting Palestinian art from the Nakba to the present day, and plans are underway for workshops, exhibitions, and collaborative programmes with Scottish institutions to foster cross-cultural dialogue.
Visitors expressed deep appreciation for the event’s breadth and emotional resonance. One Scottish guest said: “Today I met a Palestine I’ve never seen on the news — a place of poets, painters, and storytellers who carry history in their hands.”
In a night where music and memory intertwined, the message was clear: identity lives on through those who dare to tell it — and Palestine’s story, etched in art, refuses to fade.
