Young Scientists to Spend a Day at Sea: INSPIRE Program Offers Exciting Opportunity

INSPIRE Program Offers Exciting Opportunity
6 September 2024

In an exciting initiative aimed at nurturing young scientific talent, the INSPIRE Doctoral Training Partnership at the University of Southampton is offering a unique chance for students aged 11 to 14 from across England, Wales, and Scotland. Up to 12 students will be selected to spend a day as a scientist at the prestigious National Oceanographic Centre in Southampton, including an exclusive opportunity to step aboard the RV Callista, a research vessel operated by the university.

The initiative, designed to encourage young students to explore careers in science and marine research, is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). Participants will get a hands-on experience with marine research, an area increasingly vital as climate change continues to impact global ecosystems.

Call for Submissions: Creative Approaches to Climate Change

To apply for this unique experience, students are being asked to submit creative responses to the question: “How can science help us with climate change?” The submissions can take the form of a short piece of writing, a video, an art piece, or a photo series. The goal is to spark enthusiasm for scientific inquiry and creativity, with the INSPIRE team encouraging students to think outside the box.

There are no right answers—only the most enthusiastic and innovative ideas will be selected. Travel expenses will be covered for all winners, who will also need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian on the day of the event.

National Oceanographic Centre: A Hub of Marine Science

The National Oceanographic Centre is one of the world’s leading institutions in marine science research, making it an ideal environment for young minds eager to learn. From climate research to ocean exploration, the center plays a critical role in understanding our changing planet. This opportunity gives students a glimpse into the real-world applications of science in tackling some of the most pressing global challenges.

Participants will also get a once-in-a-lifetime experience aboard the RV Callista, where they will learn about the equipment used in marine research, data collection, and how scientists study the ocean’s impact on climate.

How to Apply

Interested students can apply by visiting the INSPIRE website and submitting their entry with the help of a parent or guardian. The application process requires permission from an adult, who will also need to attend the event with the student if selected.

The winners will be announced in the coming weeks, with the event date and further details to be confirmed by the INSPIRE Doctoral Training Partnership.

This initiative represents an extraordinary opportunity for young minds to step into the world of science and explore how their ideas can shape the future. It’s not only about learning—it’s about igniting a passion for discovery.
