Celebrating the traditional Palestinian dress, “My Historical Thobe” is an online international campaign launched by Falastini TV to stand against the Israeli occupation’s attempts to steal Palestinian culture and claim it as their own.

The Palestinian Thobe

The “My Historical Thobe” campaign recognizes that traditional clothing is an integral part any nation’s history, and that Israel’s efforts to claim the Palestinian dress – among many other Palestinian cultural icons – is part of a broader plan to erase the Palestinian identity, replacing it with the “State of Israel” globally.

That is precisely why this campaign aims to “acquaint the world that this piece of culture as part of the authentic Palestinian heritage” by inviting Palestinian women everywhere to participate and take pride in their identity through social media and the hashtag #MyHistoricalThobe.

Known for their intricately designed embroideries, Palestinian dresses carries within them a rich Palestinian history that dates back thousands of years.

Embroidery patterns would differ from one region to another based on factors of geographical location, work environment, and weather conditions. In fact, specific patterns used to be a symbol of women’s social status in Palestine.

Palestinian grandmothers used to be capable of identifying a girl’s hometown simply by looking at the color of her thobe, its fabric, and its embroidery pattern.

In December 2021, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed the art of Palestinian embroidery on its list of intangible cultural heritage, referring to it as a symbol of Palestinian national identity.

Cultural Resistance

The campaign also realizes that resistance against the Israeli occupation comes in many forms; cultural resistance being one of the most important, yet often neglected, acts of resistance. It is no secret that the Zionist regime uses its cultural war against Palestine and the erasure of its heritage as a way of proving its ownership of the land.

Signs of this can easily be found in the UK and the West as, where we can find Palestinian foods such as falafel, hummus and zaatar on restaurant menus under the “Israeli food” category.

Recently, contestants in Miss Universe 2021, which was held in Eilat, appeared wearing the traditional Palestinian thobe on their social media platforms. Miss Ukraine said: ” Today, on the way to Eilat, we stopped at a Bedouin settlement in Israel and plunged into their culture and traditions,” according to Al-Monitor.

“My Historical Thobe” will run for 10 days starting from February 17th to February 27th, calling on everyone to participate in highlighting and cherishing the traditional Palestinian dress through various social media platforms, and the campaign’s hashtag has already seen many posts by prominent Palestinian and Arab influencers.

Famous actress and director, Juliet Awwad, called on all her followers to “uphold all aspects of the homeland, including the thobe,” according to Falastini TV website.

“Wear the dress and join in on “My Historical Thobe” campaign with Falastini TV through your social media platforms,” Awwad said. “The love of Palestine unites us, and the preservation of its historical heritage is part of our struggle against the usurpers of the land.”

As a part of the campaign, Falastini TV plans to discuss the history of Palestinian dresses, and to provide various information about their different types and specific embroideries often seen in each Palestinian city. It also plans to post multiple “photos and videos of influencers wearing traditional Palestinian clothes.”
