Will the British government protect citizens from rising gas prices?
After a meeting with the head of the Energy Regulatory Authority (Ofgem) on Sunday, Business Minister Kwasi Kwarteng said that the UK had plans to protect the market and consumers from rising global gas prices.
“If a supplier fails, Ofgem will ensure customers’ gas and electricity supply will continue uninterrupted,” Kwarteng said in a twitter thread.
The minister also announced that he also met with the CEO of CF Industries, the largest domestic supplier of carbon dioxide in the country. “We discussed the pressures the business is facing and explored possible ways forward to secure vital supplies, including to our food and energy industries,” he added.
Kwarteng held urgent talks with executives of National Grid, Centrica and EDF On Saturday. While he planned for a meeting with industry and consumer groups in the energy sector scheduled for Monday, September 20, 2021.
