UK supermarkets are almost out of toilet paper
Toilet paper is only one of the many products coming in short supplies in UK supermarkets. The surge in energy prices and staff shortages will also strip the country of clothes, chocolate, ceramics, and toys.
The Confederation of Paper Industries said important sectors including food packaging and the production of sterile medical packaging were being impacted, according to Metro.
Why the empty shelves?
The UK energy price cap may protect the citizens from the rising energy prices, but it does not offer that same protection to businesses. That is why some manufacturers were reducing production to protect their profits, Confederation of Paper Industries Director general Andrew Large said.
He called for a ‘temporary winter cost containment measure to try and put a lid on those costs so that these very, very important industries for British society are going to be able to continue to operate’.
What will disappear from supermarkets?
Metro says there are expectations of a slowdown in production of the original pandemic panic buy item – toilet rolls.
The British Ceramic Confederation chief executive Laura Cohen told the BBC: ‘As the high pricing extends, more members are likely to be forced to stop production due to uneconomical energy costs.
Ceramic production involves a process where a sudden shutdown of business will damage the products, and cost quite a bit of money.
According to Metro, the beloved Quality Street chocolate may also be missing from the shelves, as Nestle faces ‘challenges’. While global supply chain disruption could hit availability of toys, clothes, and more.
