Liz Truss’ Degrading Views of The British Working Class

Liz Truss’ Degrading Views of The British Working Class

Many may believe that Britain is one of the best places to work. Still, on the contrary, a number of studies and surveys have shown that Britain is among the worst countries regarding healthy working environments.

Britain also records a high rate of employees stressing over work pressure due to many working hours or low wages and the high cost of living.

And what makes matters worse is the view of some political leaders of the British working class in the country. The Prime Minister, Liz Truss, once even offensively spoke of British workers and essentially called them “lazy” in a recording.

Liz, apparently, considers the British workers among the “worst workers in the world” because they “work fewer hours at work and retire earlier”.

A study by Latus Health on the quality of working conditions in Europe showed that Britain is the fifth worst country in terms of healthy work environment, and comes in order after Poland, the Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal.

This might come as a surprise for many as the United Kingdom is one of the countries that have strong active labour unions.

The study took into account multiple criteria, including, work pressure, the employee’s ability to save, the long working hours, the addiction to smoking or alcohol due to work pressure, the sense of instability at work, etc.

The study then concluded that the UK is the worst among European countries when it comes to working hours flexibility, work stability, and the employees’ ability to save money out of their income.

Truss Views on The British Working Class

A two-minute clip was once published showing Liz Truss speaking of the British workers’ “mindest and attitude” and blaming them for earning less per hour than their foreign counterparts.

In the recording, Ms Truss is heard saying: “Essentially it’s partly a mindset and attitude thing I think. Yeah, it’s working culture basically. If you go to China it’s quite different, I can assure you.”

“There’s a fundamental issue of British working culture. Essentially if we’re going to be a richer country and more prosperous country, that needs to change.

“But I don’t think people are that keen to change that.”

She then went on to point out the differences in productivity in the UK hinting that it is very different in London than in the rest of the country.

Many described the audio as offensive and called out the Prime Minister on it.

Toxic Work Environment Normalizes Mental Breakdowns

A study by “Alight” stated that about two-thirds of workers (more than 73% of them) in Britain declared that they suffer from high levels of stress, due to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy and social instability.

According to the same study, there is a worse phenomenon that is spreading in the workplace in Britain, which is the phenomenon of “mental breakdown” that has serious consequences, as 34% of workers confirmed that they suffer from it.

One of three employees also said that their supervisors paid little to no attention to their mental health, proving that once again, the UK lacks a healthy working environment.

But perhaps what’s worse is the Prime Minister of the country helping affirm those toxic views by calling the working class “lazy” and suggesting that foreign workers are better to hire.

And Liz Truss was even planning to reduce the resources for civil services in British cities, with the exception of London, because, in her view, “London is the most productive city compared to the rest of the cities that have poor returns”, and these statements sparked widespread anger among workers and unions, which drove her to drop her plans.
