The iconic left-wing publication Tribune has entered a new chapter as ownership transitions to Mohamed Ali Harrath, chairman of E Media Group — the parent company of the UK-based Islam Channel. The move, announced jointly by Jacobin and Tribune Media Group, marks a significant moment for the 88-year-old magazine renowned for its socialist and anti-imperialist legacy.

Under Harrath’s stewardship, Tribune aims to broaden its reach and editorial impact, including a planned increase in print frequency and investment in digital platforms such as podcasts, video content, and newsletters.

“Mohamed Ali Harrath has a long history of being an independent voice in the media, of campaigning and of providing a platform to those who are ignored in today’s media and political landscape,” said Jacobin publisher Asher Dupuy-Spencer.

The publication will retain its current editorial team, led by Editor Alex Niven, while an advisory board chaired by Labour MP Jon Trickett — and including key figures like Nation magazine president and Jacobin founder Bhaskar Sunkara — will help steer the magazine’s editorial direction.

Founded in 1937, Tribune has historically been a cornerstone of leftist debate in the UK. Its past editors include Labour Party icons such as Aneurin Bevan and Michael Foot, while its pages have hosted literary giants like George Orwell, Doris Lessing, and H.G. Wells.

Jon Trickett praised the relaunch, stating: “The UK is crying out for an alternative to the establishment media… The voices of socialists, trade unionists, anti-racists, peace campaigners and anti-imperialists need to be heard far more loudly and clearly.”

Harrath echoed this sentiment, calling the future of Tribune “an exciting opportunity for anyone who wants real change and a brighter future for all.” He also reaffirmed the magazine’s editorial independence, pledging to amplify the voice of the progressive left both within and beyond the Labour Party.

With over 10,000 quarterly print readers and hundreds of thousands engaging online, Tribune continues to cement its role as a vital platform for democratic socialist ideas in Britain and beyond.
