The passing of Dr. Hadi Badran… The doctor who chose Gaza despite cancer

The Palestinian medical community and the Palestinian diaspora in the UK and Europe were shocked by the passing of Dr. Hadi Badran, a Palestinian doctor specialized in anesthesia, after a long battle with cancer. Despite his advanced illness, Dr. Badran continued to fulfill his humanitarian and professional mission until his last moments. He volunteered to travel to Gaza during the last Israeli aggression, participating in treating the wounded and injured. Dr. Badran was mourned by the Palestinian Forum in Britain and the Palestinian Doctors’ Association in Europe, who praised his revolutionary and academic career, highlighting his unique example of dedication and giving.
The Palestinian Forum’s statement read: “We knew him as a generous brother, a noble doctor, and a person with endless generosity in his knowledge, effort, wealth, and everything he had. He was keen to participate in the Forum’s activities and support Palestine, with his last act being his attendance at the Ramadan Iftar and his generous donation to Gaza, despite the pain and suffering.”
The Palestinian Doctors’ Association in Europe described him as: “The doctor who embodied the true meaning of sacrifice, choosing to be with his fellow countrymen in their hardest moments, while his body was fighting its final battle against cancer.”
Who is Dr. Hadi Badran?
Hadi Badran was a Palestinian doctor born in Lebanon, raised in a family that believed education was the weapon of the Palestinian people against oppression and exile. He studied medicine in the UK and specialized in anesthesia, contributing his scientific effort to serve the community wherever he went. He was hosted by “Arab Podcast” in a touching episode, where he spoke about his father, who dreamed of becoming a doctor but never had the opportunity. His son, Dr. Badran, fulfilled that dream. He passionately talked about his belief that education is what proves the Palestinian’s existence in the world, which motivated him to volunteer and travel to Gaza, despite the advanced stage of cancer in his body.
Dr. Badran shared how those around him, especially his wife and siblings, tried to dissuade him from traveling, but he insisted on going. He was even surprised when his son told him, “I want to go with you to Gaza,” which gave him a sense of peace and paternal contentment.
The Gaza legend as narrated by Dr. Badran
During his time in Gaza, Dr. Badran was deeply affected by the dignity, pride, and generosity of the people, despite the ongoing war and hardship. He shared touching moments, such as his encounter with a woman named “Um Iyad,” who refused to give chocolate to children except as a reward for memorizing the Quran, saying, “I don’t want the Palestinian child to beg others.”
Dr. Badran mentioned that he did not sleep in Gaza, not because he couldn’t, but because he didn’t want to. He was filled with spiritual energy and a passion for volunteer work, despite his fatigue and illness. He concluded his story by saying: “I cannot describe what I saw, but if I must describe it, it is simply: the legend of Gaza.”
Goodbye, the doctor of humanity
With the passing of Dr. Hadi Badran, Palestine and Europe have lost one of their medical and humanitarian pillars. However, his message will remain, and his legacy will inspire generations. We pray that Allah accepts him among the righteous, that his knowledge and contributions be placed in the balance of his good deeds, and that He grants patience and solace to his family, loved ones, and supporters.
