The Arab Voice in Newcastle: A Close Call in Recent Elections
In Newcastle, dozens from the Arab and Muslim communities gathered on the evening of Wednesday, June 19, 2024, for an engaging session titled “Us, the Elections, and Gaza.”
This event was part of a series organized by the Arab Voice campaign. Key speakers included Adnan Hmidan, head of the Arab Voice campaign; Dr. Anas Al-Tikriti, a founding member of both the Arab Voice and Muslim Voice campaigns; and the session was chaired by Dr. Mohammed Desouki, a local community activist.
Adnan Hmidan began by reflecting on the recent local elections in North Newcastle where the candidate supported by the Muslim community narrowly lost by just eighty votes.
He expressed the community’s collective disappointment and emphasized the importance of not letting this happen in the upcoming elections on July 4th. He framed voting as a crucial way to honor Gaza and support its cause through democratic means.
Dr. Anas Al-Tikriti discussed the importance of sustained efforts in building a political platform that accurately represents the Arab and Muslim communities’ interests, concerns, and aspirations.
He criticised the dominance of the two major parties, which he argued has led to a decline in public services and a lapse in ethical standards regarding British foreign policy, especially towards Gaza.
The discussion opened up to the audience, focusing on strategies to amplify the political influence of Arabs and Muslims in the UK to advocate effectively for their rights and issues.
Yvonne Ridley, also supported by the Muslim Voice and Arab Voice campaigns, participated in the event. She expressed gratitude for the support from the Muslim Voice in Britain and encouraged translating that support into votes on July 4th.
