Shabana Mahmood… A Model of Sacrificing Principles and Humanitarian Stances for the Sake of Power

Ibrahim Al-Nuwaira 22 November 2025

It is truly painful for a person to be forced to flee a homeland that does not acknowledge even the most basic of their rights — a country weighed down by the grip of tyranny, devoid of justice — only to find themselves in another state that grants them safety, opportunity, and dignity. What is even worse is when someone who once walked that same path climbs the very ladder of those rights and reaches a position they would never have been allowed to approach in their original homeland, only to then turn against those who were once just like them, working to deprive them of what they themselves were granted.

This is exactly what the British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is doing; the Muslim migrant of Pakistani origin who is strongly pushing forward legislation that would transform the residency pathway from five years to twenty, and turn citizenship into a privilege measured by no clear standard, but rather a gift granted by the state to whomever it wishes — and denied to whomever it wishes, without justification.

Mrs. Shabana seems to be tuning herself to the same rising European wave against migrants, especially Muslims, sending an implicit message that says: “You fled your countries… so do not expect to receive what I received.” It is the story of someone who burns the bridges behind them, only to ensure that no one else walks the same road.

What is even more astonishing is that her policies — despite her migrant roots and Muslim identity — are firmer and harsher than what any fair-minded person would expect. One would have expected her to be softer in heart and closer in understanding to the suffering of those living through the same circumstances, not to turn into a voice serving other agendas that shed no light on justice but instead make the picture even darker.

Her policies have faced widespread criticism from some MPs and local officials who see these proposals as contradicting British values and the principles of justice. But the minister presses on with her project, brushing aside warnings as though determined to leave a political mark at any cost — even if that cost falls on the weakest groups.

What is striking is that she shows no respect for the European treaties and agreements on refugee protection, which clearly state that those seeking protection have the right to fair procedures, clear standards, and a humane process free of abuse or discrimination. The article on refugee rights in the European Convention on Human Rights — especially the principle of non-refoulement and the right to humane treatment — sets out clear duties for member states, including guaranteeing fair legal pathways to obtain residence and stability.

And yet, these principles appear completely absent from the minister’s perspective as she rewrites the laws with a spirit that reflects neither justice nor respect for human dignity, but instead opens the door to misuse, selective interpretation, and disguised discrimination.

Shabana Mahmood’s policy is not merely administrative strictness; it is a path that may open the door to undermining the entire protection system, turning the right to asylum and residency into a struggle for power instead of a humanitarian refuge for those whose homelands have failed them.
