Pro-Palestine Protest in London Faces Police Restrictions

A coalition of pro-Palestinian groups has announced the route for a demonstration scheduled for Saturday, March 15, in central London. The march will begin at 12:00 PM from Piccadilly (near Green Park) and head toward Whitehall. Organizers have criticized the British police for what they describe as attempts to impose restrictions on the protest.
The demonstration is being organized by several groups, including the Palestinian Forum in Britain, the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Friends of Al-Aqsa, the Muslim Association of Britain, and the Stop the War Coalition.
Dispute Over Police Restrictions
The coalition stated that it had informed police three weeks ago about the protest and its proposed route. However, organizers claim the police delayed confirming the march’s conditions, creating uncertainty that could have led to arrests.
According to the coalition, police eventually approved the route but imposed restrictions, preventing protesters from gathering at Park Lane as originally planned. The decision, organizers say, came after consultations with pro-Israel groups, who raised concerns about synagogues in the area. The coalition argues that these synagogues are not on the protest route and are located more than 12 minutes from the assembly point.
Organizers have expressed concern that these restrictions may deter participation, particularly from people traveling from outside London, Muslim demonstrators observing Ramadan, and disabled participants who require accessibility planning.
Growing Tensions and Calls for Action
The protest comes at a time of heightened tensions over the situation in Gaza. Organizers have accused Israel of violating ceasefire agreements and imposing collective punishment on Palestinians, including through a full blockade and cutting off electricity to Gaza’s only water desalination plant. The coalition also condemned recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza, which they say resulted in civilian deaths, and increasing violence in the West Bank.
Despite the restrictions, organizers are urging mass participation, calling on the UK government to end its support for Israel. The protest will be held under slogans including “Freedom for Palestine,” “No to Ethnic Cleansing,” and “Stop Arming Israel.”
The Metropolitan Police have not yet responded to the claims made by the protest organizers.
