Police under investigation for licensing Plymouth shooter gun

Jake Davison, 22, killed five people with a shotgun on 12 August. A watchdog is now investigating police staff who issued him a gun license.

The shotgun Davison used in his attack was legal. That means he went through the proper police procedures to obtain.

A third-party has already issued two disciplinary notices to Devon and Cornwall Police staff, reports Sky News.  The two individuals are said to be involved in processing Davison’s application for a shotgun in 2017.

Disciplinary notices do not necessarily lead to prosecution. It merely notifies the individuals that their conduct is under review

Why was Davison permitted a gun?

On 12 August, Jake Davison killed five people with a shotgun. His first victim was his mother. He went on to kill four other people, who did not know him, before shooting himself, all in a 12-minute attack.

Previously, September of last year, Davison had assaulted two youths. His firearm was seized by police three months later.

However, the watchdog wants to investigate the police decision to give him his gun back in July 2021, weeks before the attack on the five individuals.

According to Sky News, a police officer, responsible for investigating the assaults in 2020, has also been issued a misconduct notice.

It is said that the watchdog intended to complete its investigation before the end of this year.

The government may be planning new statutory guidance, including making weapon licence applicants undergo medical checks, and inquiring into their social media usage.
