The “Palestine Pledge” Tsunami Hits Labour: 330 Councillors Rebel Against Starmer for Gaza
In a stormy political development that places Keir Starmer’s government before an existential test, the “Vote Palestine 2026” coalition announced today that more than 1,000 local councillors from across the British political spectrum have joined the “Councillors’ Pledge for Palestine,” amid expectations of heavy losses for the Labour Party in the upcoming local elections.
Internal Rebellion and Fragmentation in Labour Strongholds

Official data released today revealed that among the 1,028 councillors who signed the pledge, 338 belong to the Labour Party, reflecting a sharp internal division. In this context, Richard Burgon, the Labour MP for Leeds East, warned of the consequences of this rebellion, stating:
“Keir Starmer’s refusal to stand up for the rights of the Palestinian people is wrong and has already badly damaged the Labour Party at the ballot box. We saw that at the last General Election, and I fear we will see it again in the May local elections. The government must listen to the voices demanding action against genocide, or we risk losing more talented councillors.”

The Political Map of Signatories
The 1,028 signatory councillors are distributed as follows:
- Green Party: 345 councillors (including Deputy Leader Mothin Ali).
- Labour Party: 338 councillors (including Matthew Brown, Leader of Preston City Council).
- Liberal Democrats: 104 councillors.
- Conservative Party: 3 councillors.
- Others: Hundreds from the Scottish National Party (SNP), Plaid Cymru, and Independents (including Independent MP and Birmingham Councillor Ayoub Khan).
Influential Figures (Electoral Heavyweights):
Matthew Brown: Leader of Preston City Council (Labour). His signature represents a significant symbolic blow to Starmer’s leadership.
Mothin Ali: Deputy Leader of the Green Party. His signing confirms that the Greens have adopted the cause as a core party strategy.
Ayoub Khan: Independent MP and Birmingham City Councillor, representing the independent voting bloc that Labour fears most.
Zoë Garbett: Green Party candidate for Mayor of Hackney, who explicitly linked the Palestinian struggle to the historic fight against the South African apartheid regime.

London and Major Cities: Crumbling Fortresses
With all London seats up for election, Labour faces a direct threat in areas like Hackney. Zoë Garbett, the Green councillor and mayoral candidate, stated:
“We have all seen the devastation caused by the genocide in Gaza, but no one has felt it more deeply than the residents of Hackney I have spoken to, who have lost family members in Palestine. This council took a stand against apartheid in South Africa; it is time to take a similar stand for Palestinians.”
In Islington, signatories reached 59% of the total councillors, while in Sheffield the figure hit 24%, and in Oxford—where Labour previously lost control—it reached 19%.
Financial Weaponry and Grassroots Pressure
The pledge is not limited to political stances; it extends to exerting pressure for the divestment of local government pension funds, which manage over £12.2 billion in companies complicit in Israeli violations, including £450 million in the arms giant BAE Systems.
Dan Iley-Williamson, Political Organiser at the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), affirmed:
“The collective movement for Palestine—which has brought millions onto Britain’s streets—is not going away. The ‘Vote Palestine’ campaign will take our demands to the May elections, and our message is clear: if you want our votes, you must stand with Palestine.”
The “People’s Pledge”: The Next Phase
Coinciding with the councillors’ movement, the coalition launched the “People’s Pledge for Palestine” today. This initiative asks voters to formally commit to considering only those candidates who have signed the “Councillors’ Pledge,” a move that could turn the tables on traditional parties this May.
