Johnson plans for “early elections” in Britain!

British PM Boris Johnson arrives for final day of Conservative Party annual conference in Manchester
10 October 2021

Boris Johnson is said to be planning to host “early elections” in November or December 2023 to trip up Labour, according to the Mirror. A cabinet source informed the newspaper that Johnson believes early elections would be his best shot at reappointment.

Elections are usually held during the summer months because UK winter tends to be wrought with bad weather and longer nights. Those conditions would prevent proper campaigning and may lead to lower turnout on the actual voting day.

But the source told the Mirror: “Labour struggles to get their people out more than we do which gives us an advantage. And we think people will begin to see the results of the PM’s levelling up agenda with roads being constructed and houses built in the Midlands and the North.”

Can Johnson change election day?

Mr Johnson has until 2nd May 2024 to call a General Election, but he may not want to delay the decision until then. And the planned repeal of the Fixed Terms Parliament Act means that the date for an election will now be in the PM’s gift again.

Mr Johnson is reported to make a final decision on exactly when to run for a second term in office after local elections in May 2023.

According to the Mirror, Winter General Elections were not uncommon in the past. December elections were held in 1910, 1918 and 1923. And Britain went to the polls in November in 1922 and 1935. (tellyexpress.com)
