From Gaza to London: A Heartwarming Welcome for Maryam as She Begins Her Healing Journey
London has opened a new chapter of hope with the arrival of young Palestinian girl Maryam at Heathrow Airport. After a grueling journey from the Gaza Strip, Maryam has come to the UK seeking specialized treatment for her amputated hand.
Accompanied by her mother and two siblings, Maryam stands as a new symbol of resilience. Her evacuation follows months of complex coordination, made necessary after the healthcare system in Gaza was forced out of service.
Broad Humanitarian Cooperation
This milestone was the result of close collaboration between the Fajr Relief Foundation and Project Pure Hope. Both organizations worked tirelessly over six months to overcome logistical hurdles and ensure the safe arrival of Maryam and her family.
A delegation from the Palestinian Forum in Britain (PFB), alongside several supporters, was at the forefront of those welcoming Maryam and her family. They presented welcoming gifts and expressed their pride in fulfilling their duty toward them.
In this regard, Adnan Hmidan, Chairman of the Palestinian Forum in Britain, stated: “We are doing the bare minimum in the face of the legendary resilience and the immense sacrifices made by our people in Gaza. We are here today to express our solidarity and support for them.”
For his part, Musab Nasser, CEO of Fajr Relief, stated that Maryam’s evacuation is part of a broader humanitarian project that has successfully transported 92 injured children from Gaza to several countries, including the United States, Jordan, and Egypt.
Nasser noted that expanding efforts toward the United Kingdom was a vital response to reach more cases, particularly those who faced travel restrictions to other destinations.
The Challenges of Medical Evacuation
Omar Al-Deen, CEO of Project Pure Hope, expressed his pride in Maryam’s arrival, noting that she is the fourth case the program has successfully brought to the UK.
He emphasized that the suffering of injured children in Gaza is beyond words, pointing out that the rate of child amputations in the Strip is among the highest globally—a fact that places a profound moral responsibility on the international community.
Al-Deen also warned against the misconception that the situation in Gaza has quieted down, stressing that the bitter reality shows casualties continue to fall daily. He argued that maintaining medical evacuation corridors remains an urgent necessity to save lives.
Community Welcome and Solidarity
Heathrow Airport witnessed deeply moving scenes as volunteers and members of the Arab and Palestinian communities in London gathered to welcome the family with flowers and messages of solidarity.
Maryam is scheduled to begin a series of precise medical examinations immediately, followed by a journey of physical and psychological rehabilitation, including the fitting of a prosthetic limb to help her reclaim her childhood.
A Call for Global Action
In his concluding remarks, Al-Deen called for a continued spotlight on the situation in Gaza, urging the international community to take practical steps to support those affected. He noted that this initiative reflects the power of collective action and the significant role of the Arab community in the UK in providing medical support to humanitarian cases arriving from the Strip.
