Dr. Ahmed Makhalati Honoured Among UK Arab Figures of the Year 2024

Dr. Ahmed El Mokhallalati, a Palestinian surgeon, will be honoured as one of the distinguished Arab figures at the 2024 Al Arab in UK (AUK) Gala Dinner. The event, themed “United for Gaza & Lebanon,” celebrates individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the Palestinian cause over the past year. It will take place on Monday, October 21st, 2024, at Richmond Hall, Hilton London Metropole.

Who is Dr. Ahmed El Mokhallalati?

Dr. Ahmed El Mokhallalati is a highly skilled surgeon specializing in burn reconstruction, hand surgery, and trauma repair. After working for several years in the UK, he moved to Gaza in early 2023, where he was appointed as the Head of Plastic Surgery at Al-Shifa Hospital. Despite the challenging conditions, Dr. Makhalati dedicated himself to providing essential healthcare to patients in dire need of medical attention.

During his time at Al-Shifa Hospital, Dr. Mokhallalati continued his medical duties even under the most challenging circumstances, staying until the first ceasefire on November 24th, 2023. He was one of only seven doctors who remained at the hospital despite the escalating risks. Facing ongoing threats and harassment from occupying forces, including direct threats to his family, he decided to secure their safety by sending them to the UK.

After the destruction of Al-Shifa Hospital, Dr. Mokhallalati transferred to the Gaza European Hospital in February 2024. Due to a shortage of doctors, he had to take on various medical roles beyond his specialization. Unfortunately, during this period, he suffered an injury to his finger, temporarily preventing him from performing surgeries.

Despite these difficulties, Dr. Mokhallalati managed to return to Gaza through the International Medical Corps, where he worked at a field hospital until June 2024. As the security situation worsened, the organization urged him to leave to protect his mental well-being. With great difficulty, he exited Gaza through Jordan, after which Palestinians were prohibited from returning as the conflict escalated.

Dr. Ahmed Mokhallalati’s recognition at this event reflects his extraordinary humanitarian efforts in delivering healthcare under the harshest conditions. His role as a leading surgeon in Gaza, despite immense personal and professional challenges, made a significant impact on the health sector and the lives of many injured civilians. This honour acknowledges his vital contributions to alleviating human suffering and his unwavering commitment to his profession.

The AUK Gala Dinner 2024

The Gala Dinner will celebrate Dr. Mokhallalati alongside other distinguished Arab figures who have contributed to the Palestinian cause in 2024.
