Al-Arab in UK has announced the appointment of Professor Dr. Qusay Kamal Al-Din Al-Ahmadi, the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in the United Kingdom, as Chair of the Judging Committee for the Outstanding Arab Personality in Britain 2025 Award. The annual award honors distinguished figures who have made notable contributions to the Arab community in the UK.

A new phase for the award

Adnan Hmidan, Editor-in-Chief of Al-Arab in UK, stated that the final list of nominees will be revealed soon, paving the way for public voting among the Arab community in Britain to select the most deserving names. The winners will be honored during the Annual Arabs in Britain Gathering, scheduled for December 2025.

Hmidan added that this year’s edition marks a qualitative leap in the nomination and selection process, with a fully independent judging committee established outside the platform’s management to ensure transparency and integrity. The committee will assess nominations according to strict criteria, nominate three personalities for direct recognition, and shortlist three others for public voting.

Composition of the Judging Committee

The committee is chaired by Dr. Qusay Al-Ahmadi, who has served as the Iraqi Cultural Attaché in the UK since 2025 and was previously President of the University of Mosul (2019–2024). Dr. Al-Ahmadi holds a PhD from Saint Petersburg University and a postdoctoral fellowship from the University of North Texas in Environmental Engineering. He has published dozens of research papers in the fields of water treatment and environmental sustainability, and is known for promoting environmental education and academic cooperation between British and Iraqi universities.

The committee members include:

  • Sabah Al-Mukhtar – Iraqi lawyer based in London, President of the Arab Lawyers Association in Britain.

  • Tahrir Waswas – Business consultant with the West Lothian local council in Scotland, community activist, and co-founder of Amal Edinburgh.

  • Samira Mellouki – Moroccan journalist and correspondent for Akhbarna Al-Jaliya, residing in London for over three decades.

  • Abdulrahman Al-Jabri – Social activist working in the UK real estate sector, dedicated to supporting Arab creatives and community initiatives.

  • Katya Yousef – Lebanese-British journalist with Al-Araby Al-Jadeed, using her media experience to support voluntary and social projects.

  • Muna Adam – Elected councillor for the Green Party in Kensington and Chelsea, CEO of Shaman organization, and board member of the Paddington Development Trust.

  • Dr. Samer Jammous – Academic at Cranfield University, Arabic Content Development Lead for the Saudi HRDF-funded Cranfield program, and Director of the King George V Community Centre and Arabic School in Derby.

Evaluation criteria and methodology

The committee has established a set of detailed criteria to evaluate nominees according to award categories — public service, culture and arts, and science, health, and technology — assigning relative weights to each based on importance.

Key criteria include:

  • Service to Arab and Islamic causes (high weight 5/5)
  • Impact within the community and preservation of identity and heritage
  • Sustainability and continuity of positive impact
  • Leadership, inspiration, and motivation of others
  • Authenticity and use of art for humanitarian causes
  • Scientific innovation and service to humanity and the environment

The committee emphasized that these weights serve as guidelines to ensure fairness and highlight priorities, rather than rigid calculations. The aim, it noted, is to select individuals who embody generosity, integrity, and positive influence in both Arab and British societies.

In conclusion, Adnan Hmidan stressed that the award seeks to honor the bright faces of the Arab community in Britain, celebrating those who contribute meaningfully to the country’s cultural and social fabric. He affirmed that Al-Arab in UK is working to elevate the event into a leading annual platform recognizing Arab achievements across various fields.
