Brighton bin strike: How much longer? Has an agreement been reached?
An ongoing bin strike in Brighton is forcing local residents to keep all windows shut and change routes when taking children to school to avoid possible health hazards caused by the ‘disturbing’ smell and scattered rubbish on the streets of Brighton.
Rats, foxes and seagulls have taken the opportunity to rip open bags of discarded rubbish which is subsequently being strewn all over the public footpaths and roads as a result of the bin lorry drivers strike.
Local residents are being advised to double bag their rubbish before throwing it out and even being requested to keep their rubbish at home, in order not to contribute to the increased waste laying around the Brighton’s streets.
Workers will break their strike temporarily, between Monday October 18 to Wednesday October 20, to help clear some of the rotting refuse from the streets. Afterwards, they will go back on strike unless an agreement is put in place between the Brighton & Hove City Council and the representatives of the GMB union.
At present, a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 19th, in hopes that the two sides can agree upon a suitable course of action to resolve the ongoing issue. The council is said to be putting a ‘generous’ pay offer which they hope the GMB will accept. Otherwise, the strike will resume until Sunday November 21st.
Residents are concerned that should this situation persist for much longer; they may be forced to continue living in unsanitary and potentially harmful conditions. Given the day and age we live in, it is hard to believe that Great Britain has left one of its cities to become subject to these conditions. Especially not on the basis of refusing hard working members of the public a living wage for their efforts in keeping Brighton the lovely clean city we all know and love.
