A weekly music gathering in central London is helping to preserve Algerian Andalusian music within the UK diaspora, offering a welcoming space for learning, performance and cultural connection.

Held at Chadswell Centre, the sessions bring together Algerians of different ages, including children, women and men, who meet to practise traditional Andalusian repertoires accompanied by the oud.

Keeping a living tradition alive

During the latest gathering, participants sang well-known pieces from the Algerian Andalusian tradition, creating an atmosphere shaped by shared memory and cultural pride. Voices and instruments blended in an intimate, communal setting that reflected a strong attachment to heritage far from home.

The initiative is organised by Rachida, who explained that the sessions operate under the name Liqaa Al-Amal (Meeting of Hope) and are held every Saturday. She said the project aims to safeguard Algerian Andalusian music and pass it on to future generations, with a particular focus on young British Algerians living in London.

“These gatherings are not just music lessons,” she said. “They are a space for people to meet, reconnect and feel a sense of belonging. Music links the past with the present and helps keep our cultural identity alive in the diaspora.”

A cultural space for the Algerian community in London

Over time, Liqaa Al-Amal has become a regular cultural meeting point for the Algerian community in London. Each week, participants return not only to rehearse and learn, but to sustain a musical heritage that continues to resonate despite the distance from Algeria.
