“Which?” magazine officially announced in September that Aldi is Britain’s cheapest supermarket ever, beating both Lidl and Waitrose. (ambien)

The consumer study conducted by “Which?” involved filling up a shopping basket of 22 goods, both branded and unbranded, and comparing the total cost. According to the Mirror, Aldi won by a 37p margin; its basket costing £24.03 compared to £24.40 at Lidl and £33.06 at Waitrose.

The same research also found Aldi was 38% cheaper than the most expensive supermarket in September, Waitrose, for an equivalent basket of items.

The Mirror listed totalled prices at other famous supermarkets:

Asda: £26.19

Sainsbury’s: £27.95

Morrisons and Tesco: £28.31 (tied)

Ocado: £29.84

The branded items in the research included brands such as Andrex toilet paper, Colgate toothpaste and McVitie’s digestive biscuits. While the own-label products included mixed peppers and semi-skimmed milk.

Aldi managing director of buying Julie Ashfield said to the Mirror: “We’re committed to providing our customers the best prices possible, and we’re immensely proud that we have taken the top spot.

Inside Aldi

“Being named the UK’s cheapest supermarket in September marks our tenth win and we’re dedicated to continuing to make life a little easier for our customers.”

Last month, The Mirror reported that Aldi is trilling a store in which the customers would pick up their shopping and get charged when they walk out.

The German discount supermarket would not tell media in which London branch the new system is being implemented. However, an anonymous tip from one of its employees told the Mirror that the new system cost Aldi around 1.8 million pounds.
