London — Al Arab in UK Platform has formally requested urgent clarification from the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon Yvette Cooper, regarding the UK Government’s handling of the detention of British citizen and political commentator Sami Al-Hamdi in the United States.

The request was issued in an official letter dated 11 November 2025, signed by Adnan Hmidan, Editor-in-Chief (and Chairman) of Al Arab in UK Platform. In the letter, Hmidan expressed “deep concern” over what he described as the absence of visible or effective British consular support during Hamdi’s two-week detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Background: A detention that sparked international concern

Mr Hamdi was detained in late October after his valid U.S. visa was suddenly revoked during a scheduled professional visit. Despite the lack of any charge, conviction, or allegation of wrongdoing, he was held for approximately two weeks before being allowed to depart the United States voluntarily.

Public reporting highlights that Hamdi’s detention drew widespread media attention and intervention from civil-society organisations, including CAIR and the Muslim Council of Britain. His family publicly thanked international advocates and human-rights groups—but made no mention of any meaningful UK Government involvement, raising significant questions about the level of consular engagement.

Several major outlets—including The Guardian, Reuters, AP News and Al Jazeera—reported that the reasons for his visa revocation remain unclear, prompting concerns that his political commentary, particularly on the Middle East, may have played a role.

What Al Arab in UK is demanding from the Foreign Secretary

The letter asked the Foreign Secretary to provide a formal written response suitable for public release, addressing four key areas:

  1. What steps did the FCDO take from the moment of Hamdi’s detention until his return to the UK?
  2. Did UK officials engage directly with U.S. authorities to ensure Hamdi’s legal and human rights were upheld?
  3. Will the Government review its handling of the case to determine whether it met the standards expected for protecting British nationals abroad?
  4. Can the Foreign Office confirm that all British citizens receive equal consular protection, regardless of ethnic, religious, or cultural background—and that unconscious or structural bias plays no role in determining who receives urgent diplomatic attention?

Why this case matters

AUK noted that Hamdi’s case raises “legitimate concerns about the consistency and fairness of the United Kingdom’s consular protection framework,” especially in politically sensitive situations. The letter emphasises the foundational principle that every British citizen is entitled to equal representation and defence by their Government, irrespective of their background or political views.

Within the British-Arab community, the case has heightened fears that political commentators of Arab or Muslim heritage may not receive the same level of protection as other British nationals when facing legal or political pressure abroad.

A matter of transparency and accountability

By issuing this formal inquiry, Al Arab in UK Platform is calling for clearer standards, greater transparency, and public accountability regarding how British citizens—particularly journalists, analysts, and commentators—are protected overseas.

The Platform is awaiting a detailed written reply from the Foreign Secretary, and stresses that this matter is not only about the individual case of Sami Hamdi but also about reaffirming the UK’s commitment to fairness, equality, civil liberties, and the protection of its citizens worldwide.
