In a significant recognition of her political activism and unwavering defense of human rights, Layan Mohammed, the British-Palestinian activist, will be honored at the upcoming Alarab in UK (AUK) Annual Gala Dinner.

She joins a distinguished group of Arab figures who have made notable contributions in various fields over the past year, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue. This special event, themed “United for Gaza and Lebanon,” is set to take place on October 21, 2024, at the Richmond Hall of the Hilton London Metropole, with several prominent guests in attendance.

Who is Layan Mohammed?

Layan Mohammed’s rise to prominence began in 2016, when she delivered a powerful speech about Palestinian rights during the “Jack Petchey” Speak Out Challenge. This impactful moment drew her significant attention but also made her a target for racist attacks and attempts to silence her voice.

Rather than deter her, this adversity propelled her to enhance her activism, positioning her as one of the leading advocates for Palestinian rights.

In January 2024, Mohammed announced her candidacy for the general elections as an independent candidate for the Ilford North constituency, challenging the influential Labour politician Wes Streeting. Her decision followed her resignation from the Labour Party, driven by her discontent with its perceived complacency regarding Gaza and Palestine, and in protest against statements made by party leader Keir Starmer, which defended the Israeli blockade on Gaza.

Despite facing numerous challenges and limited resources compared to the larger political parties, Layan Mohammed achieved a remarkable feat in the July 2024 elections, garnering over 15,000 votes—only 528 votes shy of her opponent.

Her campaign received support from the Arab Voice and Muslim Voice initiatives, which emphasized the importance of enhancing representation for Arab communities and the Muslim community within the British political landscape. Mohammed has impressed many with her ability to challenge the existing party system and amplify the voices of voters who have felt marginalized by traditional party politics.

She has been particularly vocal in her criticism of the close relationship between the Labour Party and Israel, denouncing the party’s endorsement of oppressive Israeli policies. In her statements, she has clarified that her electoral campaign was not simply about securing a parliamentary seat, but rather a call to reshape the political landscape towards greater justice and representation.
