Police have allegedly admitted to a technical error in Britain’s busiest speed camera. Drivers are demanding a refund of the traffic fines imposed on them due to the faulty camera.

A defect was found in the speed camera that caused Britons to pay fines worth 5 million pounds between 2015-2017, according to RAC.

A speed camera on Maybray King Way in Southampton captured more than 51,000 motorists. All are assumed to have exceeded the 30 mph speed limit. (Phentermine) While it turned out that the second busiest cameras broke only 38,000 during the same three-year period.

At its peak, the Southampton cam recorded more than 320 speeding drivers in one week, or the equivalent of 70 violations per day – with a fine of at least £100 per violation.

Since then, Hampshire Police have admitted that the camera was taking “incorrect readings” for vehicles with a “high flat rear”. Owners of pickup trucks, SUVs, motorhomes, and other taller vehicles have been particularly hard hit by the camera’s technical fault.

Destroying lives

“As well as paying fines they shouldn’t have had to, some drivers will no doubt have suffered very negative consequences from having points added to their licences,” said Simon Williams, a road safety spokesman for RAC. “Anyone falsely caught should have both their fine and any points revoked.”

RAC noted that the angriest drivers demanded a refund for the mandatory speed awareness courses and compensation for the time they spent completing them.

Including IT engineer Nathan Thompson who received a message claiming he was driving his vehicle at 50 mph. However, he was proven to be driving at 25mph from the car’s dash cam footage.

The 37-year-old was quoted by RAC as saying that his car footage saved him from going to court and losing his job, saying that “this technology shouldn’t go wrong. It has the potential to seriously destroy people’s lives”.
