Covid cancels End of Year Fireworks in the UK
New Year’s Eve London firework show is cancelled once again amid a rise in covid cases in the UK.
Organisers fear the event, which regularly attracts 100,000 people to the streets, could be cancelled closer to date due to covid uncertainties this winter, reports Daily Mail.
Last year’s event was already cancelled in September and by December the country was pushed into a second lockdown. But almost 80% of the UK population are now double-vaccinated, while large events have been operating since June. (popphoto.com)
The New Year’s will not be celebrated in the traditional way. However, officials hope to celebrate it in more innovative – and safer – way.
A televised light and fireworks show – watched by millions – was held in place of the traditional fireworks show.
What will Londoners see this year?
According to the Daily Mail, a spokesman for Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said his team were looking at ‘exciting new options’ as an alternative for this New Year’s Eve.
“This year, as always, London will be welcoming the new year in a spectacular way. Due to the uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, our world-famous New Year’s Eve display will not be held on the banks of the Thames this year,” the spokesman said.
‘Further details of this year’s celebration will be announced in due course.’
Instead of London’s traditional firework show to celebrate 2021, there was a 10-minute display over the Thames aired on the BBC at midnight.
Reports have said there may be plans for an alternative event in Trafalgar Square, which has the capacity for up to 19,999 people. But the documents state the event will be limited to 9,999.
